Jay Gruden wants focus on Kirk Cousins’ play, not contract

RICHMOND, Va. — As the Washington Redskins report to training camp, there’s one topic coach Jay Gruden does not want to address with quarterback Kirk Cousins: his contract. There’s plenty of time for others to do so; plenty of time before any sort of deal could be reached, anyway. And there’s plenty of other topics to discuss.

Cousins, of course, will play under the franchise tag this season. But that’s not Gruden’s concern.Wholesale Washington Redskins jerseys

“The contract will take care of itself,” Gruden said. “We won’t have any conversations about the contract or future contracts or any of that stuff. All we’ll focus on is this year and him getting better and being the best quarterback he can be. I know that’s his intent also.”

Cousins and the rest of his teammates participated in a conditioning test on Wednesday. They will practice for the first time Thursday.

Cousins is coming off a season in which he threw 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, helping the Redskins win the NFC East.Wholesale nfl jerseys

A primary debate this offseason centered on his worth: Should the Redskins have offered him more before free agency to consummate a deal? Their best offer was worth approximately $16 million a year — about $4 million shy of what Cousins’ side wanted.Wholesale nfl jerseys

But now the debate will return to his performance. Can he duplicate last year’s success?Cheap nfl jerseys

“He has a year of film that people will study on him,” Gruden said. “He’ll have to study other people and prepare himself no differently, and we’ll coach him no differently. He’s a great player who made great strides last year, and we’re all excited. But he’ll have to continue that progress.”

that’s unsettling as a player.

That leaves Morgan as the lone active NFL player to speak out about cannabis research, though he said he’s shared his extensive homework with other players and expects some will come forward to join him as cannabis is de-stigmatized.

He said he got overall very positive response from a variety of people, from players to doctors to politicians.

Skeptics may wonder if Morgan is a casual user of marijuana. He said has never failed a drug test for marijuana, has never used it and cannot now because of the NFL’s rules against it.

“I think anyone who says that is missing the point,” he said. “We are obviously bound by the testing protocol. It’s something that we are not able to use. You’ve got to understand where the motive is coming from. If that was the case, then there are a lot of people who are wanting to use recreationally. If that’s the main motive, why would somebody speak up about it? Just to blow their cover?”

“It’s spreading the awareness of it from a medicinal standpoint.”
The key to getting the NFL to do the sort of research Morgan desires is the rescheduling of marijuana as a drug by the FDA.Wholesale nfl jerseys

“They group them together with LSD, heroin, things along those lines with no medicinal value,” he said. “If you’re a Schedule I drug, then they are basically saying there is no medical value. So for cannabis to have a Schedule I rating, is inaccurate, I know that probably in August, September, the DEA is looking to hopefully reschedule it, or at least certain compounds of the plant, so it’ll be more widely available for people putting it in the same category that the opioids are in. So it’ll be easier to research. I think that, in and of itself, will open up another dialogue between the league and its players and the PA.”

Morgan said he’s concerned about his future after football. He was the Titans’ first-round pick out of Georgia Tech in 2010 and is heading into the second year of a four-year, $27 million contract that included including $10.5 million guaranteed. In 76 career games, he has 27.5 sacks.Wholesale nfl jerseys

He missed the final six games of 2015 with a shoulder injury which limited his play in the weeks before he was shelved. The Titans didn’t use him in team drills during the offseason, but he’s slated to be full go when the team starts training camp practices Saturday.

“CTE, all this stuff is real … that’s unsettling as a player,” he said. “You want to be able to think that you are going to be there for your family in full capacity, that you’re going to be able to be an active member, contributing member of society. With something like that, I’ve got to look at what my options are. If this happens to be an option, which I think it will be, then I’m going to look into it …”Cheap nfl jerseys

“Every player is in a different position. But at the root of it, if your motivation is being proactive about preserving your health, then I don’t think you should have to tippy-toe around anything.”  Wholesale Tennessee Titans jerseys

Bucs’ starting lineup projection features newcomers on defense

A young Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense led by Jameis Winston continues to build on a promising 2015 season, while a number of new faces will make their marks in Mike Smith’s defense. Here’s a projection of who the starters will be:

Quarterback (Jameis Winston): Winston, who threw for 4,042 yards, 22 touchdowns and 15 interceptions his rookie year, wasted no time this offseason. He came into training camp 20 pounds lighter, thanks to a tough training regimen and not eating after 7 p.m. Look for him to cut down on interceptions and show improved mobility and footwork.Wholesale Tampa Bay Buccaneers jerseys

Running back (Doug Martin): After two injury-plagued, uninspiring seasons in 2013 and 2014, Martin rebounded in 2015-16 and showed the burst and explosiveness that brought about a stellar rookie season. He was subsequently rewarded with a new contract. Martin will continue to benefit from not being the lone ball carrier and having Charles Sims around.
Receiver (Vincent Jackson): After four straight seasons of at least 1,000 receiving yards without missing a start, Jackson suffered a knee injury that forced him to miss seven games last year. He is hands-down Winston’s most reliable target and can line up anywhere on the field.
Receiver (Mike Evans): Evans had some uncharacteristic drops in 2015, and his production in the red zone fell from 12 touchdowns to three, but he managed to record his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. He’ll benefit from having a healthy Jackson lining up on the other side and not having defenses zero in so closely on him.
Tight end (Austin Seferian-Jenkins): Seferian-Jenkins has missed 16 games in two seasons, so health is a concern. He was booted from practice during the final week of OTAs because, according to head coach Dirk Koetter, he “didn’t know what he was doing.” He will line up in the traditional “Y” position.
Tight end (Cameron Brate): The former undrafted free agent out of Harvard earned four starts last season and emerged as one of Winston’s favorite red zone targets. Brate will line up in the “F” spot or H-back role. (The Bucs will have two starting tight ends, instead of carrying a traditional fullback.)
Left tackle (Donovan Smith): Just like Winston, Smith dealt with a steep learning curve last year and had to face the likes of J.J. Watt, Cameron Jordan, Robert Mathis, Trent Cole, Greg Hardy, Kony Ealy, Ryan Delaire, Jared Allen, Jason Pierre-Paul and Everson Griffen. At times, he struggled (remember the wicked spin move Griffen put on him?), and at other times, he held his own, including keeping JPP, Hardy and Watt from sacking Winston.Cheap nfl jerseys
Right tackle (Demar Dotson): Although it’s close between Dotson and Gosder Cherilus, Dotson has the slight edge. Cherilus will be a solid backup swing tackle and will provide veteran leadership in Logan Mankins’ absence.
Left guard (J.R. Sweezy): Despite missing the offseason program because of an undisclosed injury, Sweezy edges out Kevin Pamphile for the starting left guard position. He has massive shoes to fill with Mankins’ retirement.
Right guard (Ali Marpet): His jump from Division III to the NFL (and inside from tackle to guard) wasn’t without a few growing pains, and he won’t have Mankins to lean on anymore, but Marpet grew quickly last season and hopes to continue.
Wholesale nfl jerseys
Center (Joe Hawley): His performance last season beat Evan Smith for the starting job, and he’ll build on that while Smith serves as a backup center and guard.

WR Stedman Bailey returns to West Virginia as student assistant coach

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Stedman Bailey, most recently a member of the Los Angeles Rams, will join West Virginia’s staff as a student assistant coach.

WVU coach Dana Holgorsen announced Sunday that Bailey will join the coaching staff. He’ll also enroll as a full-time student to complete his bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies.

Bailey was shot twice in the head while sitting in a car with his family in November back home in Miami. Last month, the Rams placed him on the reserve non-football injury list so he can stay around the team while not counting against its 90-man roster.

The 25-year-old receiver has not been cleared to return to playing football despite returning to workouts and getting multiple opinions. He was, however, present for Rams OTAs in June, helping out with the receivers and on special teams.

In a statement, Bailey said that while his playing career isn’t over, the opportunity to return to WVU gives him more time to heal.

Bailey played at West Virginia from 2010-12, compiling 3,218 receiving yards and 41 touchdowns.Cheap nfl jerseys

In a statement released by WVU, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the Rams “couldn’t be happier” for Bailey and “wish him and his family the best as they step into the next chapter of their lives.”Wholesale nfl jerseys

When protected, no QB performed better than Russell Wilson last season

Football Outsiders recently took a look at how all of the league’s starting quarterbacks performed with and without pressure in 2015. And one takeaway from their findings is that Russell Wilson was virtually unstoppable last season when the Seattle Seahawks’ protection held up.Cheap nfl jerseys
According to the numbers, Wilson was pressured on 31.7 percent of his dropbacks, the fourth-highest mark among quarterbacks. Only Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel and Colin Kaepernick were pressured more. While much of that is on the offensive line, the fact that Wilson often holds on to the ball and extends plays has to be taken into account as well. Wholesale nfl jerseys
But on the plays where Wilson was adequately protected, he posted the highest DVOA of any quarterback in the NFL. Andy Dalton was second and Carson Palmer was third.
The Seahawks have committed just over $11.7 million to their entire offensive line in 2016, the lowest total in the league. The projected starters from left to right going into training camp are: Garry Gilliam, Mark Glowinski, Justin Britt, Germain Ifedi and J’Marcus Webb. Coach Pete Carroll appears focused on settling on a five-man group sooner than last year, when the offense failed to find consistency in the first half of the season.Wholesale Seattle Seahawks jerseys
The good news for the Seahawks is that Wilson’s numbers were good even when he faced pressure last season. He ranked fourth in those situations, behind Jay Cutler, Palmer and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Wilson set career highs across the board in 2015, completing 68.1 percent of his passes, averaging 8.1 yards per attempt, and tossing 34 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He led the NFL in passer rating.
Since he is only 27 years old, Wilson should be in store for another big season if protection holds up.

Will Chip Kelly’s no-huddle offense fit with the 49ers’ talent?

Today’s question: Will coach Chip Kelly’s no-huddle offense fit with the 49ers’ talent?

Josh Weinfuss, Arizona Cardinals reporter: Talent? What talent? The scariest player on the 49ers, by name, is wide receiver Torrey Smith, followed by running back Carlos Hyde. Now that that has been addressed, Kelly’s offense can work to an extent with the current rendition of the Niners. It’s really up to the players buying in to the up-tempo offense. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick can flourish in Kelly’s system because of his athleticism. One player who could also benefit is wide receiver Bruce Ellington — Andre’s cousin. Bruce is a speedster and can be a threat when defenses begin to wear down late in games. As we’ve seen over the years with Kelly and the Eagles, if the players can adapt to the mentality and have the conditioning, then the talent level won’t matter as much the first season.Cheap nfl jerseys
Nick Wagoner, Los Angeles Rams reporter: Looking at the Niners’ depth chart on offense probably doesn’t inspire much in the way of confidence among the faithful. Sometimes, a way to make up for a lack of talent is to lean on scheme. That’s why you see so many college teams running spread systems, because it can give them a chance to make up for what they might lack athletically. In this case, adding Kelly should help San Francisco’s offense improve over what it did last season. It will take some getting used to, but Kelly will stick with it and most likely get some results. It won’t be a cure-all because the Niners are still lacking pass-catchers who can help whichever quarterback is the starter on a down-to-down basis. Getting running back Carlos Hyde back healthy would go a long way in helping. Remember, Kelly’s offenses have been at their best when they run the ball successfully. The Eagles finished first in the NFL in rushing in 2013, which was also Kelly’s best year in Philly. Wholesale San Francisco 49ers jerseys

Sheil Kapadia, Seattle Seahawks reporter: In terms of tempo, offensive players will practice fast and should be well-conditioned at the start of the season. When Kelly’s offense took the league by storm in 2013, the Philadelphia Eagles had a great running game led by LeSean McCoy, a vertical passing attack headlined by DeSean Jackson and a quarterback who didn’t make mistakes in Nick Foles. In Carlos Hyde, Kelly has a running back who figures to see plenty of touches. And Torrey Smith is a receiver who can stretch the field.Wholesale nfl jerseys Quarterback is obviously a question mark. The question, to me, is more about how Kelly will adjust his scheme. His offense ranked third in efficiency in 2013 and then fell to 13th and 26th the next two seasons. The Eagles turned the ball over often, and defenses adjusted to what they saw in Kelly’s first year. His Eagles teams failed to peak late in the year, and the tempo put stress on Kelly’s defenses, which played a high number of snaps. The 49ers’ offensive talent is not top-tier, but the bigger question is: How will Kelly adjust his scheme to match the personnel?

Can LT King Dunlap return to form for Chargers?

SAN DIEGO – With the San Diego Chargers set to open training camp in less than two weeks, I will take a closer look at some of the question marks the team must answer leading up to the regular season.

During the offseason, Chargers general manager Tom Telesco made some minor tweaks to an offensive line that underperformed last year, leaving the group mostly intact.

San Diego drafted USC product Max Tuerk in the third round and signed veteran Matt Slauson, adding much-needed depth and talent to the center position. But when the Chargers begin the regular season, four of the five projected starters will be the same as in 2015.
Left tackle King Dunlap and left guard Orlando Franklin played a combined six games together last year.

Dunlap and Franklin could not stay on the field for any length of time in 2015, and that instability on the left side of the line significantly impacted the play of San Diego’s entire offense.

However, the Chargers believe Dunlap can return to the type of player he showed in 2014, when he played at a Pro Bowl level according to quarterback Philip Rivers.

Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt saw a player in Dunlap with renewed energy during the offseason. The Chargers will need Dunlap to play at a high level in order for the offensive line to jell.

“I look at the tape — and I know he missed some games last year — but I see a lot of what I saw from him in 2013,” Whisenhunt said at the end of San Diego’s mandatory minicamp. “He’s had a good week of practice, staying low and with good technique and working hard. I see energy from King and staying upbeat, which I like.

“I think he and Orlando are developing a relationship there. And I think Slauson has really helped from a standpoint of a guy that’s played in the league, and communicates well with that group. And it kind of goes out from there — when you’ve got a quarterback and a center that work it well together in how they identify and communicate, it kind of spreads out.”

Whisenhunt said one of the things that helped to build chemistry along the offensive line was going against John Pagano’s defense with multiple looks during the offseason, which forces the guys up front to quickly identify the front and how to block them. Wholesale San Diego Chargers jerseys

At 6-foot-9 and 330 pounds, the 30-year-old Dunlap has the talent to be a productive blindside protector in the NFL. Dunlap had his best season in 2014, playing a full, 16-game season for the only time in his eight-year NFL career. Dunlap played 1,000 snaps, giving up just three sacks on 625 passing plays, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Chargers rewarded Dunlap with a four-year, $28 million deal. But in 2015, Dunlap missed nine games due to concussion and ankle issues. He played just 294 snaps last season.

Because of his injury history, the Chargers restructured Dunlap’s contract during the offseason, with his $3.3 million base salary in 2016 fully guaranteed, but no money guaranteed beyond 2016.Cheap nfl jerseys

For his part, Dunlap said he’s committed to staying on the field in 2016. If Dunlap can return to the performance he put on tape in 2014, the Chargers should be much more consistent along the offensive line in 2016.

“Last year sucked,” Dunlap told the team’s website. “It was awful with all the injuries. Personally, I felt like I let a lot of people down missing all the games I did. I let the whole team down. The goal for me this year is to be healthy and stay healthy.”Wholesale nfl jerseys
